Strikeforce continued their Challengers series on Friday night, from the Jackson Convention Complex in Jackson, Mississippi. Justin "The Silverback" Wilcox earned his fifth straight victory and tenth overall, picking up a unanimous decision victory over BJJ World Champion, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro. Wilcox used his improved striking to pick Shaolin apart on the feet and his wrestling background to keep the fight standing. Training out of American Kickboxing Academy, Wilcox has shown improvements in his striking, supplementing his wrestling background.
Shaolin drops his 3rd straight fight, with loses to current DREAM Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki and rising Strikeforce prospect Lyle Beerbohm. The 3-Time BJJ World Champion could never get anything going in the fight, never being able to achieve any success on his takedowns and landing few shots to really put Wilcox on the defensive.
"We wanted to exploit his standup," said Wilcox after the win. "At AKA, we have great standup."
Wilcox also campaigned for a fight with fellow up and comer Lyle Beerbohm, hoping to make the most of his recent success in Strikeforce.
St. Preux Continues to Find Success
Ovince St. Preux continued to find success in mixed martial arts, turning in a solid performance against the returning Antwain Britt. After an accidental eye poke to Britt, St. Preux dominated the first round, hurting Britt with a kick to the body, getting Britt down and unleashing several shots on the ground, nearly ending the fight. St. Preux, often called OSP, dropped down for a Calf Slicer, a move he used to win before, but the round ended before anything could happen.
The 2nd Round saw Britt come back after getting a takedown and dominating the round with top control to pull himself back into the fight. OSP returned the favor, hitting a nice switch on Britt and taking him down and dominating the top control to earn a unanimous decision victory.
I knew coming into the fight Antwain would be a tough opponent, and it showed," St. Preux said.
St. Preux earns his 2nd Victory under the Strikeforce banner and fifth overall, while Britt drops his second fight in a row and 3rd out of his last 4 fights.
Whitemare/Spiritwolf ends in a No Contest
Easily the most anticipated fight on the card, fans were disapointed 6 seconds into the contest when an accidental eye poke from Whitemare landed on Spiritwolf, prompting the referee to call for a timeout and the cage side physician to check the eye of Spiritwolf.
After Spiritwolf let he doctor know that he couldn't see out of his bleeding eye, the doctor was forced to stop the fight, resulting in the no contest.
Marius Zaromskis, the current DREAM Welterweight Champion, will have to wait to get back in the win column, having dropped his last two fights, one to current Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and to Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos.
